What is a Nursing Tank?

The 4th trimester hero piece
What is a Nursing Tank?

If you’re planning to breastfeed, a nursing tank or more generally speaking, a nursing top, will make life (where you have to whip out your boobs every couple hours to feed your baby) a LOT easier. Without a nursing top, you (and your baby) would have to deal with the hassle taking off your top or pulling it up whenever you breastfeed. Trust us, you’d rather not.

Nursing tops are essentially tops that provide easy breastfeeding access. For instance, a stretchy neckline that pulls down (like our Daily Ribbed Tank), a layer that opens up or zippers along the side. The most common nursing-friendly tops are your typical buttoned shirts.

In our humble opinion, the best nursing tops are comfortable enough to sleep in, can also be worn as a maternity tank (i.e., bump-friendly) and provide convenient, *one-handed* breastfeeding access - because you’d probably be holding your hangry baby in the other.

Some nursing tanks come with a built-in bra so you have one less thing to worry about. Not all will come with removable pads, so if you prefer having pads for no-show-through, do keep pay attention to the product description before making your purchase.

We might be biased, but our top pick for nursing tanks with a built-in bra is our Soft Ribbed Nursing Tank, which comes with a supportive built-in bra as well as removable pads. Our removable pads - unlike most others - are soft and flexible, which makes it easier for you to unclip the tank and fold it down for breastfeeding :)

If you think nursing tanks are only suitable for hot weather, think again.

Most breastfeeding mothers wear a nursing tank under a sweater, so their tummies stay covered and warm when they pull up their sweater to breastfeed.

Whichever style of nursing top or tank you choose, you will find plenty of ways to make use of this versatile postpartum closet staple, so stock up on my few! x
